Anime 2011 In Review

I had fun typing up one of these last year, so I thought I'd do it again.

Yondemasu yo, Azazel-san (OVA)

Episodes Seen: 2/3
Status: On Going
As I type this, the last(?) episode is scheduled to be released Spring of 2012. I definitely plan on watching it. There is hardly any anime out there that make me laugh, but this one really took the cake. The storyline is so out there, but it manages to keep with the whole comedic situation and still have a plot. This is not only restricted to the OVA's, but I'll get to that later in the list.

Dragon Crisis

Episodes Seen: 6/12
Status: Dropped
I really liked the bright art style and the storyline in the beginning, but episode six disgusted me so much that I flat out dropped it. What was so appalling? The treatment of a new character, that just so happened to be part wolf. Of course, at some point she get's tickled and her wolf ears get felt up, so she starts blushing and groaning like she's having an orgasm (how original). Seeing this cheap motif pulled just put me off entirely. The series was fairly good other then this annoyance.

Gosick

Episodes Seen: 9/24
Status: Dropped
I love dark elegant things and that theme fit Gosick to a tee. The mysteries themselves were not that compelling, but it was fun to watch Victorique in action. The main thing that bothered me about this series was the fact that they were revealing major details about Victorique rather quickly and she struck me as a character made much more interesting as a mysterious figure. I just didn't think I could stay focused much more when we already knew most of her secrets on the offset.

Mahou Shoujo Madoka★Magica

Episodes Seen: 12/12
Status: Completed
This is probably the series that everyone is sick of hearing about, but there is a reason for it. I started to watch this not expecting a thing. I only watched the first episode because in the promo art, I thought Madoka's magical girl dress was quite cute. However, the first episode hooked me with the introduction of Mami at the end. I do not want to leave spoilers, but this series quickly takes your expectations and jams them down your throat sideways. This series really had the whole package and I looked forward to each new episode. It makes me happy to see an anime with just a cast of girls can be so much more then shits and giggles; it can even take your breath away.

Yumekui Merry

Episodes Seen: 1/13
Status: Dropped
This was another whim I tried out, but it just didn't do anything for me. Neither the lead heroine nor the main character was left rather interesting and the whole plot just didn't snag me. I think I gave it too high an expectation due to the dream motif. The first episode broke the limits of imagination by featuring cats in boots and gloves. How many cups of coffee did that take to dream up? It probably got better, but I just was not interested for any more.

Kore wa Zombie Desu ka?

Episodes Seen: 1/12
Status: Dropped
With most viewers, I expected so good old fashioned brain craving fun by the title, but the whole zombie thing was something the series just didn't care to give much credence. Sure the main character is "back from the dead", but that's about it for the whole zombie thing. As far as I could tell, they just crammed a bunch of girls into the series and that was that. Knowing that there would be more chicks injected into the cast, there was really nothing to look forward to.

Fractale

Episodes Seen: 2/11
Status: Dropped
This was a unique little series that I was interested in, but there were problems right off the get go. For starters, the official art was fantastic, but once the show started, it was like "whut?' For some reason the art style of the anime was completely different then the advertisement art. I could learn to appreciate the art, but compared to the original art, it looked shoddy. Even color schemes were changed. To make things more aggravating, since Funimation got the rights to stream it, things got retarded when the original company all of the sudden decided that it was all Funi's fault that there were illegal subs, so they cut them off until this changed. I was just too fed up to bother with it anymore.

Steins;Gate

Episodes Seen: 24/24
Status: Completed
The butterfly effect at it's best. Much like Shiki, this is the kind of series you have to work at for the big pay off. It isn't until about episode 13 or so that the shit hits the fan and when it does, it makes your jaw drop. I enjoyed the cast of quirky characters as well as Huke's original art style. The one thing that kind of ruined it for me was the romance between Rintaro and Kurisu. I just don't really like romance in general and, for me, it dampens the whole 'edge of your seat' aspect. Despite that, it was fantastic.

Dororon Enma-kun Meeramera

Episodes Seen: 2/12
Status: Dropped
Being a Go Nagai creation, I really should have known better with this one. The first episode was cute. I didn't find it particularly funny, but I liked it. The second episode skipped all formalities and had the lead girl stripped and teased with the whole "tentacle rape' motif. And with that, I shut the cover on this one.

Yondemasu yo, Azazel-san (TV)

Episodes Seen: 13/13
Status: Completed
There was not much different between the series and the OVA's. Both of which are hilarious and vastly underrated. Seriously, Lucky Star may have cute girls, but I didn't find it funny at all. There is absolutely no restraint with this series and I wish it would never end, but unfortunately it was only 13 episodes long. Why are the best series so short?

C

Episodes Seen: 11/11
Status: Completed
Really bizarre. Chop full of personification and hallucinogenic imagery, C was an awesome watch. My only complaint is that there were a lot of questions that went unanswered, but also kind of adds to its allure. The fact that a lot goes unexplained, which just heightens the oddity of it all. There was also a rather clear statement about living in the present and forsaking the future. I won't give anything away, but I really enjoyed this one.

Ao no Exorcist

Episodes Seen: 25/25
Status: Completed
Shonen anime is always usually the same and of course, this one was shonen, but there were a lot of elements that set this one a part from the others. For one thing, while most anime's in general avoid religion like the plague, this one embraced it. It did not take its self too seriously by completely glorifying or vilifying the Catholic Church. Its strengths lie in the fact that there are demons and angels everywhere and they can be the most unlikely of people. It was also one of the few that kept me from despising the main character, quite a feat really. This one was just epic in everything it did.

Shiki Specials (OVA)

Episodes Seen: 2/2
Status: Completed
One word that best describes these is brutal. Just fucking brutal. And I thought the last episode was horrendous... Of course, this only bolsters my opinion that Shiki is quite possibly the greatest horror series in creation. Even though my favorite character only made a cameo appearance in the second special, both episodes went above and beyond my expectations.

Mawaru Penguindrum

Episodes Seen: 8/24
Status: Dropped
Picture a stock market crash and you'll picuture my overall experience with this anime. This first episode had me so excited. The art was cool and the plot was so strange that it made uo hungry for the progression. It was the progression that the series decidedly had a problem with.
Between the reuse of a certain montage in almost every episode, the series was more concerened with a side character's love problems rather then continuing with the main plot.I just got too damn sick of it. They probably should have shortened there episode output so there wouldn't have been so much happy hose shit.

Mayo Chiki

Episodes Seen: 2/13
Status: Dropped
Again, I should really have known better. I could only get through two episodes. The eye rolling factor was off the scale. Just the same old ecchi motif played over and over. Really not much substance to it other then a chance for boy's to whack off while they watch it. I'm sure it's good if you're in to that sort of thing though. Next please.

Tantei Opera Milky Holmes: Summer Special (OVA)

Episodes Seen: 1/1
Status: Completed
As I type this, there are currently no English subs for this ova. Since it was Milky Holmes, I liked it anyway, even though the episode revolved around the bitchy cop chick. The visuals were cool as usual and if found the level of interest appropriate for an ova.

Kyoukai Senjou no Horizon

Episodes Seen: 12/13
Status: On Going
This one was a surprising combination of ecchi sci-fi and an actual plot. Sure, all the women had impossibly huge boobs, but surprisingly, the series managed to actually carry itself without constantly pointing this fact out. My only complaint is that a majority of the story went unexplained and there were way too many characters to give each one appropriate attention. This was an interesting change of pace for me, but I don't think I will stick around for the second season.

Phi Brain: Kami no Puzzle

Episodes Seen: 13/25
Status: On Going
Sure, a show about some kid solving puzzles sounds like a certain king of games, but I found this one to be quite fun. My favorite aspect of this series is not so much the plot, but the character interaction. The addition of a certain Jun Fukuyama is much welcome too! I still have
12 episodes to go and I don't plan on dropping it any time soon.

Guilty Crown

Episodes Seen: 1/22
Status: Dropped
Redjuice's artwork is what snared me on this series, but even that couldn't save it in my eyes. Let's see, we've got the wimpy male protagonist who defies logic at every turn. We've jot J-pop up to wazoo. And we have the hot girl in a skimpy dress who also happens to be a famous singer. And let's not forget, we gotta having her crying out in ecstasy as the protagonist thrusts his hand into her chest to retrieve some mythical weapon of sorts. Yeah the almost but not quite orgasm is something no sees coming, right? It was like having a beautiful table set for dinner, but no damn dinner is on the table. I hope for the fans sake, that the show grew a brain, but I was too disgusted to wait and see.

Un-Go

Uploaded with ImageShack.us
Episodes Seen: 11/11
Status: Completed
Just another story about a kid in a panda jacket that just so happens to be a hot chick who also so happens to be a demon and oh, by the way, this is a detective show. Yeah, Un-Go was pretty off the wall, but I really loved it. The mysteries were convoluted and very hard to follow, but that did not matter much to be. The central character's issues, in my eyes, were far more compelling and interesting then the mysteries themselves. However, if you are interested in just mystery, I do not think this would be a good pick for you. Hopefully, when episode 0 is released on DVD's, someone will sub it. There's no doubt I'd watch it.

Ao no Exorcist: Kuro no Iede (OVA)

Episodes Seen: 1/1
Status: Completed
A cute little OVA seen through the eyes of everyone's favorite demon cat, Kuro. This met my expectations as being fairly mild in regards to action, but I like how they managed to fit in cameos of all the main characters. Personal favorite scene was Amaimon hanging upside down, stuffing his cheeks with Octopus balls. Just an awesome little special.

Kyousougiga (ONA)

Episodes Seen: 1/1
Status: Completed
If you can visualize an acid trip combined with a box of lit fireworks, then you're half way there. This ONA made hardly any sense at all, but in this case, this matters very little. The bright and bizarre imagery combined with bombastic fantastic characters grabs your eyes by the optic nerves and refuses to let go. My only complaint is that i want more! Seriously, this was awesome. It's one of those things you have to see for yourself. Words just don't do it any justice.

My 2010 Anime Run Down

I haven’t posted here in awhile so here is a cliché New Year analysis is regarding the anime I have seen last year.

Ladies versus Butlers!

Episodes seen: 3/12
Status: Dropped
Truth be told, the reason why I started watching this was because I saw the little mini figure of Flameheart (blonde drill hair) that I really liked. I got through a few episodes before gradually losing interest. Of course, because of the studio involved, I expected a lot of ecchi, but I just got tired of the harem aspect quickly. The two main characters were good with the whole hate turned to love thing, but then a bunch of other girls were involved and it just felt repetitive. I would definitely recommend it to anyone who really enjoys ecchi and harem. The art was splendid and it even turned out to be funny in some instances. It's a good anime, but it's not my type.

Dance in the Vampire Bund

Episodes Seen: 3/12
Status: On Hold
I read the manga first and was very excited when the anime announcement came out. What turned me off right away was the fact that the first couple of episodes I have seen deviated vastly from the manga. It is my understanding that it sticks more to the main plot towards the end, but I've put it on hiatus until further notice. The one thing about the series is, while I really like the heroine, Mina Tepes, I despise the male protagonist Akira. So, that is my main hang-up with the series. Eventually, I will get around to watching all of it, but I'm not in the mood as of now. Plus, I would like to add that not every vampire anime should be compared to Twilight. Every time I read something about that in a blog or forum I die a little inside. I swear that Twilight has the same effect on vampires as CSI has on juries. STOP TREATING THEM THE SAME, DAMMIT!

Katanagatari

Episodes Seen: 1/12

I originally watched this for the unique art style and it is a good series, but I ran into a problem right after the first episode. I fell in love with the first bad guy Koumori, in the first episode. Since an hour long episode was released once a month, there was quite a bit of exposure with this character before he got killed within the same episode. I had initially planned to keep watching the series, but I kinda got annoyed with the main heroine and I didn't feel like watching her for an another eleven episodes. Plus, unless you love the main dude, you're heart will be broken since nearly all the characters don't meet with a happy end. In order to watch this series, you must be patient and work for your action. Since this was originally a light novel, there is quite a bit of talking which a lot of people complained about first hand. Overall, I believe this a very neat series with lots of colorful characters. The artwork alone is worthy of a watch.

Shiki

Episodes Seen: 22/22
Status: Completed
Hands down, the best horror anime I have ever seen. I cannot describe how awesome this series is. It has everything. Cute girls, hot men, emotion, horror, atmosphere and even though the anime is over, the manga isn't. Without a doubt, this is my favorite for the series. At moments, it brought me to tears from the gritty and heavy scenes. I will warn though that even though there is A LOT of gore, you must wait for the build up, it is not immediate. I believe it is more in line with the Higurashi series. I am ecstatic to say that two bonus episodes will be released on DVD in the summer. One thing I found astounding was that the anime caught up quickly to the manga, so instead of creating a whole bogus conclusion (*cough* Soul Eater *cough*) they stick very well with the main storyline and they don't make up any BS that would be completely out of line from the manga. Outstanding, just beautiful.

Ookami-san to Shichinin no Nakamatachi

Episodes Seen: 1/12

This anime has an interesting premise and I had planned to continue watching, but I just lost interest when I read the summary for the second episode. I really like the whole thing with putting a fairy tale motif in with school kids, but for some reason or another, I just couldn’t stay engrossed. Perhaps it was due to the main character being a tsundere, of which I think has been done to death not to mention that I feel that that type of character is just a glorified bitch (no offense to any fans out there). As with all the series on my list, it was good, but it just wasn't for me.

Black★Rock Shooter

Episodes Seen: 1/1
Status: Completed
I had been gearing up for this OVA since its announcement. Huke's art is simply breathtaking on its own, let alone having it animated. I found the whole school girl friendship aspect very inventive of the animation crew, since, I believe, it was their sole creation apart from Huke's designs. The fight scenes were well animated and managed to create the near emotionless ballet captured in Huke's art. The way the OVA left off seemed to give leeway for a follow up OVA, of which I am more then geeked up for. People who are action hounds may get easily fed up with the modern aspect of the OVA, but I believe it's a good build to to the reason why BRS must fight. It's simply awesome.

Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt

Episodes Seen: 13/13
Status: Completed
The styling of this anime had me really excited for obvious reasons. Even though everyone has pointed this out, I will again. The animation is very reminiscent of The Power Puff Girls (the original, not the anime). Being an American, this had my attention instantly. Usually, I get exhausted right away with anime that constantly uses sex as it's selling point (which explains my pickiness), but this was done in such a way that it was comedic and downright sexy at times as opposed to smutty. With the exception of one or two episodes, each week seemed to top the last episode, which is rather impressive for my attention span. Gainax has really outdone themselves. Not only does the anime give significant pros to Western animation, it still manages to hold on to the outrageous balls-to-the-wall hilarity of Japanese humor. There is a second season in the works, of which I am definitely in line for.

Shinryaku! Ika Musume

Episodes Seen: 1/12
Status: Dropped
I started reading the manga first because of the anime announcement. The aspect of having a squid girl (*gasp!* not a nekomimi?!) as the heroine was definitely intriguing. The series made me think of Invader Zim in the style of a diabolical cutie that has no clue as to who to enact their nefarious deeds. The animation and pace of this anime was truly impressive, especially for a manga with such short chapters. I don't really know why I didn't follow up on this series. I might even pick it up again at some point. It may be because between the other animes I was watching at the time, this was too different in overall tone. Now that my series are over, I may be more game for it.

Tantei Opera Milky Holmes

Episodes Seen: 12/12
Status: Completed
I had no interest whatsoever in this series in the beginning. In fact, it was two episodes away from finishing when I started watching. A certain animated gif, this one to be specific,
that my interest was piqued (it was just too damn cute). Despite its moe appearances, the humor was off the wall and had a heaping helping of WTF. Not to mention that the character Twenty (who is shockingly not played by Jun Fukyama as I previously assumed) is quite possibly one of the greatest comedic relief characters of all time. The art was very shoujo styled in the amount of sparkle and cute, but it held its own and managed to stand out. Simply put, adorable meets funny as hell.

Kuragehime

Episodes Seen: 11/11
Status: Completed
What intrigued me the most about this one was the title and the fact that the manga had already won awards despite its uninspiring description, i.e. cute girl is actually a guy. What was shocking was how much it spoke to me on a personal level. It played on the fact that most little girls have the hope of becoming princesses when they grow up but are beaten down by the harsh reality of life. Being a twenty-one year old virgin, I can definitely identify with Tsukimi, the jellyfish otaku. Not only is she (seemingly) unattractive, but she also has odd interests and understandably, has developed social problems. Apart from my own personal connection, the anime is funny and imaginative. Mere facial expressions and quirks issued a chuckle from me. I can honestly understand its acclaim. It is truly a work of art

Mirai Nikki

Episodes Seen: 1/1
Status: Completed
Probably the biggest let down of the season. Not because it was bad, but because there was no precedent as to what to expect before its release. The animation was great as well as the voice acting. The let down? It was only 3 minutes long. It seemed more like a wink for potential studios to pick it up for a full length series, but if so, it would have been nice if it had been marketed as such. Even though I feel that Mirai Nikki is a bit overrated, an anime would have been welcome and I really feel for the hardcore fans that are probably more than a little pissed off right now.

And that's it. If you're still reading this, you're a real trooper and I'd shake your hand if I could. Thank you!

Who's Got The Problem?

Below is a forum problem post I set up on Anime Paper. what follows are the responses. Do I have a right to be angry/upset or am I the one in the wrong here?

Original forum post:
A week or two ago, I tried uploading various scans from the Shiki visual book. I checked to make sure they were not already uploaded. Every scan I submitted, the user Nat would post the same scan at the same time and so my scan would be denied because it was already in the gallery. I tried about three or four scans at different days. I didn't get points taken away, but I was really angry because it seemed like Nat had her scans in storage and when she saw me triing to upload my scan, she would post hers instead. I tried to contact Nat,but every time I tried to get on to her user page, my computer would freeze. Nat is an administrator, so I figured that's why she could boot my scans and post hers instead. Has this happened to anyone else?

Ps. This is not an attack on Nat. I am simply tring to find out why this occured.

Nat's response:
It's not bias, it's a waste of my time to approve your very low quality submissions if mine are already done. Try submitting high quality scans in the future, if you're scanning them yourself.

Your can always use PMs to contact users without accessing their user pages.

***
After her response, the post was locked, so I did not get to respond. I reported her response for her rude demenor and another administrator explained how I could PM Nat without acessing her main page. This is the message I sent her.

PM Message:
Listen, I don't want to start a flame war with you or anyone, but I do feel compelled to speak with you in regards to your response to my thread inquiry. Even thought I specificly stated that my intent was not to attack, you appeared to take a decidedly hostile stance. Y' know you could have just easily have said that my scans were too low of quality as opposed to their mere submission being a waste of your time. I was under the impression that most contribution galleries encouraged members not alienated them.I know my scans suck, but at least I'm trieing. I suppose i'll just stick to posting dumbass comments on the forums to earn points or y'know stay at Minitokyo.

Nat's Response:
Their approval would be a waste of time, because they would have been shortly removed requiring an extra step that doesn't happen if they're just rejected.

If you know and say your scans suck, then you're not trying at all. You want other people to "earn points" to download your scans that you already think suck. It sounds like you want to waste everyone's time.

And instead of trying to improve, you tell me you want to post "dumbass comments" in the forum to earn points. You really didn't think that one through.

My Last Response:
Well hon, it seems no matter how cordial I try to put things you just can't seem to hear me from way up a top your pedestal there. I won't bother you again with my lowly existance. Goodbye and good luck sweetie.

***
Did I handle this situation well? Was Nat being rude? The whole thing has really gotton my upset and I would just like to get an outsiders opinion on this mess. Even if no one responds to this, I guess it makes me feel a little better just putting it out tnere.

Tsuki Board Contest

I entered Tsuki Board's phoro contest and now I really wish I hadn't. I suck in absolutley everything so I don't know why I thought this time would be any different. Anyways you had to take a photo of Tsuki board's mascot interacting with one or more of your figures.

First prize is Hatsune Miku VN02 mix

Second prize is Saber Triumphant Excalibur

Third prize is Nendoroid Kotobuki Tsumugi

First prize is pretty snazzy, but I would want Mugi-chan the most. I wouldn't want Saber at all though. She's one of those anime chicks that get's reproduced constanly by absolutley every toy company out there. Too bad I won't get any. I'm not going to post the photo I submitted since it's so mediocre and all. I hope whoever wins Mugi takes care of her.

Pre-ordered this last year and it's supposed to be here any day now. I picked the placid faced version A.

The Making of Gollum

Okay, so I've never been into The Lord of the Rings, but ever since I saw this parody by Michael Swaim, I've been really interested in the character Gollum. This book is written by the man himself, Andy Serkis.

Rena Ryuuguu Mini figure

I wanted the one that's holding on to the billhook, but this was the only one readily available and it's still adorable! I had a choice between this or a little plush keychain of Mio Akiyama dressed as a maid, but I don't own anything of Rena and I have a niffty Mobip figure of Mio.

Gollum figure

A talking figure that comes with interchangeable heads. I could have gone with a regular less expensive one, but what really sealed the deal was the fact that one of his phrases happens to be that cutle little song he sings in the forbidden pool.

This series is effin' hillarious! How could I possibly resist a little plushie of Ludwig himself?
